Lighting Therapies to Cure Winter Depression

By Michael Russell SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) also defined as winter depression, is a serious condition that has as a cause the lack of bright light during the winter days. No wonder that this form of depression is treated with light therapy. The incidence of SAD is higher in the northern regions of the Globe, due to their long winter nights. Statistically women are more affected than men are. The illness has serious repercussions on the general well being of the patient; hormonal disorders (including worsened PMS symptoms for women), weight gain and tendency to overeat and sleeping disorders (oversleep). Yes, you’ve got that right: SAD is not a typical melancholic depression. Because SAD is caused by the absence of light it is only natural that light therapy (as a non-invasive remedy) is preferred to treat this depression. The idea is to replace the amount of light found in normal summer days with artificial light. The most important is the intensity of the light and not its color spectrum. Therapeutic light is up to 40 times brighter than normal room lights. Many people who suffer from SAD purchase some light boxes (although therapists will argue that inappropriate exposure might lead to secondary effects: disturbances in the retina, anxiety, etc) and use them while they fulfill normal daily tasks: watching TV, doing laundry, reading or eating. The patients are advised not to stare into the light, but to perform these tasks as if they would be in the presence of ordinary light. The duration of the treatment varies from one week to maximum three weeks and many patients use the light boxes the whole winter, each day. SAD might recur; so many patients choose to keep their light boxes for further use. If you suffer from SAD and intend to purchase a light box, but you are disturbed by the high price, you should know that some health insurance companies do reimburse for the purchase of the light boxes. It is wise to call your health insurer and ask whether there is coverage for such a purchase in your policy or not. Just remember: light therapy will just improve your condition, but there are no warranties that it will cure your depression. As a matter of fact, no antidepressant cures the disorder. When light therapy doesn’t relieve your symptoms you should consult your physician again and ask for treatment alternatives. He or she might recommend medication, in addition to light therapy and not to replace it. If you don’t suffer from SAD or any other depression for that matter, but you would still like to bring more light into your home during winter (or maybe just when your windows are not large enough to let in the proper amount of natural light), you could always purchase a light box made of high power LEDs. Compared to the white fluorescent light boxes, LED light boxes have the advantage of reducing energy costs while emitting light in the same brightness. Many such devices are cheaper than their fluorescent counterparts and if you don’t need bright light, you can always dim the LEDs. The Simplest Business Card Ideas Are Always The Best

By Josh Barkin Innovative business card ideas are often misunderstood. The key message intended for prospective customers becomes lost in radical attempts at originality. These attempts at originality can in fact have a negative impact on prospective customers, invoking a deeper discussion about the actual design and presentation of your business card, rather than how your business can actually help others succeed. The last thing you want to encourage when handing out your business card are more questions about what your business does, or why you chose such an idea for your business card in the first place. Many design and communication firms will attempt to awe and inspire others with radical and non-traditional business card designs. Ironically, these companies exist to help you better communicate a clear message. To develop your business card ideas, start by creating a simple business tag line. Grab a piece of paper and pen and start to develop a tag line that either captures the essence of your business, or at the very least, is a broad statement of your business vision, your goal, or something which convinces people that you are a leader in your industry. Sometimes called a “motto”, or in more professional circles, a “competency statement”, your tag line should be short, to the point, sometimes catchy, but always memorable. As an example, this tag line, belonging to an enormously successful Canadian mattress manufacturer, “Why Buy a Mattress Anywhere Else”, is clear and to the point and the tag line is an integral part of their marketing campaign, used across mediums including, print, television, radio and the Internet. Other tag lines are more abstract, but memorable, such as the McDonald’s campaign, “I’m Loving It!”. A tag line can be simple, as long as it can be used to help build trust in the customer. For example, Jim Smith, Certified Programmer, or, Eric Gibson, Professional Photographer. There is no rule for the tag line, just keep it tasteful, positive, clear, and to the point. Photo business card images are gaining momentum among business card designs, because people have a tendency to remember visuals over text. For example, if you are a wedding planner, even subtle, full color imagery can be effective to communicate a message without words and can create a lasting first impression. You may utilize a background image of a couple in love at the alter, a detailed and elaborate wedding hall, or a bride in reflection decked in her bridal gown. The right image selection can visually communicate your industry or area of expertise, and then encourage the card holder to read the details. Many websites offer a free, online business card maker which can help you develop your business card ideas and experiment with language and presentation using point and click web-based tools. Before you commit to going to print, you should forward your ideas to friends and colleagues in order to solicit their feedback and ensure your business card is one that will not be thrown away. —————– Josh Barkin is the Director of Marketing for Professor Print, a leader in online business printing and design. Catching Smallmouth Bass In Rivers

By Trevor Kugler One of the most enjoyable things to do on this planet is to catch smallmouth bass, while wading in a river. The angling is done in the same manner as fishing for trout. The exact same gear is even employed. The only difference is the type of fish that you’re catching. In central Pennsylvania, we used to regularly catch 3-4 pound smallmouth on the exact same gear that we used for trout and it was a lot of fun. Talk about getting you in shape for trout fishing! Smallmouth bass with the help of the flowing current will, most certainly, get you ready for most any trout that you might encounter. It’s widely accepted that pound for pound, smallmouth bass are the hardest fighting fish that there is. Catching smallmouth bass is a ton of fun. Just for clarification, I’m speaking of putting on your waders and fishing for them the same way you would for trout. The baits and methods are normally the same as well, although with small mouth’s larger baits can normally be employed if the angler would like. For example, spinners and spoons up to ounce can be used for smallmouth, whereas with trout I normally don’t use spinners or spoons larger than 3/8 ounce. Smallmouth Bass are voracious feeders, so color and size changes with the situation. As with many types of fishing, experimentation is integral to success. One of the most effective methods for catching Smallmouth Bass in rivers is to use live bait. We’ve always had great success fishing live worms rigged on a set of gang hooks. Then you simply bounce the worm off of the bottom, while flowing with the current. This is a deadly method for catching Smallmouth, and is almost always effective. Fill your bait bag with worms, rig one on a get of gang hooks, and give it a try. You won’t be disappointed. The bottom line is that catching smallmouth bass, while wading in rivers, is the same as fishing for trout in rivers. The equipment’s the same the bait’s are the same, and the tackle’s the same. The only difference is the type of fish that you’re catching. In many instances, both of these fish can be caught in the same places, although if you’re catching smallmouth, you usually don’t catch a ton of trout for some reason. In any case catching smallmouth in a flowing river is a ton of fun, and you should give it a shot. Trevor Kugler is co-founder of JRWfishing.com and an avid angler. I Found Love On a Online Dating Site

By Ken Katz Over the past few years, I discovered a few personality traits about myself that I wanted to change. When it comes to relationships I have had a hard time changing. I am stubborn. And, I don’t like change. Sometimes, when you are set in your ways, change is hard. Finding love has always been hard for me. I think I had found that special woman that I will wanted to spend the rest of my life with, but then the bubble would burst. I discovered that what I wanted from the relationship and what I actually had was vastly different. Probably my expectations were too high. I just wanted love, to be loved and to share my life with a special person. The women I tend to fall in love with tend to have different ideas. Some of the women wanted to be supported, some seemed to just want a friend and then some really didn’t know what they really want. I found that I tended to stay in the relationship too long. I didn’t leave when I knew I should. I did this because I always had hoped that the relationship would change for the better. I had discovered that this is a false hope and never got better. My problem is that I am was easy. What people call a pushover. It probably is a combination of low self esteem, shyness and having a really easy personality. I try to take life in stride. Even though I think I know what is happening, it is still really easy to take advantage of me. My love life had gotten so bad that after my last relationship I decided I never wanted another relationship again. I was finished with this search that I have been told from childhood. It was the fantasy that I must seek and find the right woman to share a life with, to support and take care of. I came to believe that that was “garbage” advice. I would take care of these woman buy they never gave back to me. But, Internet dating helped me slowly understand and change my personality traits. I registered with a few online dating sites that I had researched on Google and found on dating site directories. I did not go to to the big boys, like eHarmony or Match. I stayed with the smaller sites, to learn and get comfortable with this new form of finding a companion. I first started with a dating site, which is now out of business, because it had a forum area. In the evenings after work I would go and log into the forum to meet new people. I met both men and woman and many had similar experiences to me. I felt comfortable, because, I was anonymous, and could make myself known only when I wanted. I guess this is the shyness in me. I then moved onto another site I found on Google and sounded fun. It turned out to be a good decision. I found a community of people with similar interests that I quickly started to make friends with. I also was able to find friends in my local city and we started to hang out. We occassionally as a group would meet in restaurants and other times meet for drinks. It was a comfortable setting for me and a lot of fun. Well, about 3 months after joining the dating site forum, I met a woman that seemed to share similar interests as myself. We made each other laugh and actually we both were in no hurry to meet face to face. We were having so much fun on the internet with each other we were afraid it wouldn’t last if we met face to face. This went on for 7 months until I got up the nerve to invite her out to one of our groups get-togethers at a local restaurant. To my surprise meeting her in person for the first time was like meeting someone I always knew. It was a very comfortable feeling to meet someone the first time, but know all about her because we had been conversing on the forum for so long. Well, to make a long story short, we went out with the group a few more times before deciding to go it alone by ourselves. It has been 2 years with this wonderful woman and I have never been happier. It took me 30 years to find the woman of my dreams. And, I am very happy. Without the internet and doing some life searching and changing some of my personality traits, I don’t know if I would have ever had the courage to really search for happiness. I believe there are people like me who are also lost when it comes to dating. The best advice I could give them is find a dating site you are comfortable with a step in one foot at a time and find happiness. Good Luck! Seven Reasons Why I Love to Preach on Money

By Rod Rogers Most pastors admit that they are hesitant to preach on money. I understand their reluctance because I once shared it. However, I learned that my fears were not validnothing terrible happened because of my stewardship sermons. In fact, the results were just the opposite of what I expected. Here are some reasons why I honestly love to preach on money: 1. Because I Love Knowing God Is Pleased With Me When I Do. According to Acts 20:20 and 27, faithful pastors will not shrink back from preaching anything that is profitable for their people. When I preach on money, I am refusing to be intimidated into shrinking from my duty. That makes God happy with me and I like feeling His pleasure. 2. Because I Love Teaching the Major Themes in God’s Word and Money Is One of Them. I love preaching the great themes of the Bible such as sin, grace, justification, God’s love, and redemption. Great themes have great power and are a delight to proclaim. Financial stewardship is one of those great themes. You’ve heard the statistics. The Bible has over 2,000 references to money and the management of money. The book of Proverbs alone is filled with them. Jesus talked more about money than about any other subject, including heaven and hell. Of Jesus’ thirteen parables, sixteen deal with money. One out of every ten verses in the gospels has to do with money or possessions, a total of 288 verses. If God thought it important to devote so much of His word to the subject of money, I want to devote some of my time to preaching it. When I do, I find it extremely satisfying. 3. Because I Love Teaching on Subjects That Fascinate People. Sermons with immediate, practical life applications are fun to preach because you know people have a felt need for them. When I preached through Romans, it was hard to focus people’s attention on the imputation of Adam’s sin in chapter 5. None of them were lying awake at night wondering, “When is Rod ever going to preach on the doctrine of imputation?” However, it’s easy to keep your audience’s attention when preaching on money, because everyone is interested in it! Most lay people tell me they wish their pastor would preach more sermons about biblical money management and giving! 4. Because I Love to See My Preaching Transform Lives in a Huge Way. I’ve never been satisfied to preach a sermon for its own sake. I want to see it make a difference in my people’s lives. I can’t think of any other biblical theme that does this so quickly. Every year I saw people’s lives transformed overnight by my stewardship preaching. Moms came home to raise their kids, couples quit fighting over money, people cut up their credit cards, and tippers were transformed into tithersoften after just one sermon. Ministry just doesn’t get any better than that. 5. Because I Love the Satisfying Feeling of Tackling a Tough Subject Head on for the Good of My People. Truthfully, most of our anxieties about preaching on giving never materialize. But the first few times you do it with butterflies in your stomach, you go home Sunday afternoon knowing you did a courageous and noble thing for your dear flock. I love that feeling. 6. Because I Love Talking to People Who Can’t Thank Me Enough for Preaching About Money. During the fifteen years I was a senior pastor, I received more gratitude for preaching about money, than for any other subject. When God used my stewardship sermons to get people out of debt, reduce marital conflict, and bring them into financial blessing, they couldn’t thank me enough. I confess, I like being thanked. 7. Because I Love to Have Fun. Some of the most fun preaching experiences I shared with my people were in sermons on biblical giving. It’s not hard to find plenty of things to laugh about when talking about money. And it helps disarm the defensive: “A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down.” Pastor, don’t miss out on the fun. Schedule a stewardship series. Go into the pulpit with a positive attitude and lots of humor. Watch God work. And have a great time! Some Of The Best Reasons You Should Be Following A Seafood Diet

By Gregg Hall Eating seafood is part of a healthy diet. Since we are living in a health and weight conscious society find foods that are high in beneficial proteins and low on saturated fats are quite important. The health benefits of seafood can be the lowering of cholesterol, lowering the risk of heart disease, lowering the risk of stroke, and building muscle. It is easily apparent to see the effects of a high seafood diet when visiting a coastal community. In general these people live longer healthier lives. Fish and seafood with higher protein can prevent weight gain naturally, and it is easier to digest. It is a natural and easily obtainable food source in some areas making is a good alternative for red meat or poultry. Omega 3 The essential oil in seafood is Omega 3; this can be found in fatty fish like tuna, salmon, and sardines. These have high levels of two kinds of Omega 3 fatty acids are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It is recommended by physicians to have at least two portions in a week. They keep the heart healthy and help to prevent future cardiovascular disease and lower blood pressure. There is also evidence that fish can help prevent and possible alleviate some mood disorders, making it not only heart healthy but brain food too. White fleshed fish, in particular, is lower in fat than any other source of animal protein, and oilier fish contain substantial quantities of omega 3s or the “good” fats in a diet plan. Fish does not contain the “bad” fats, omega 6 fatty acids, which are commonly found in red meat. The high content of poly unsaturated fatty acids in seafood lowers serum cholesterol levels. Omega 3 fatty acids change the critical balance of certain blood components called lipoproteins, reducing low density lipoproteins and very low density lipoproteins that deposit cholesterol along the artery walls. Fish is low in saturated fat and provides the body with essential vitamins and minerals, such as, vitamins A, B, and D; zinc, iron, and selenium. Dietary Advantages Seafood can go a long way toward helping consumers achieve dietary goals. Most shellfish are low in fat, with a total composition of less the 5% fat; many varieties have less than 1% fat. Thus, with such a small amount of total fat, most seafood provides only 190 calories for a 3 ounce serving, cooked. But for a healthier choice, go for the poached, baked, or grilled fish, rather than fried. Fried fish is much higher in fat, especially if it is cook in a batter. This does not mean you can’t enjoy the occasional fish and chips; it is just healthier not to counteract the good oils with the bad. Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida. Should You Pre-Qualify Your Dates?

By Obi Williams Time is an important factor in the dating process. The further along you are in your career, the less time you will have to devote to dating. Use your time wisely and pre-qualify your dates. Pre-qualifying simply mean that before you make the investment of time by going out on a date with a person, you should first make sure that that person meets your qualifications and/or expectations. In the real world when youre shopping for something of high value like a car or house, you are always encouraged and sometimes required to be pre-qualified before you will be shown a new car or house. These sales people and companies dont want their time wasted by Lookie Lous and Chatty Cathies. This is a successful approach for salespeople to closing more sales. You should adopt the same philosophy when youre dating. Pre-qualify your date to make sure there not going to take up your precious time. In order to find out how much this person is worth to you in time, take the opportunity to pre-qualify them. What are you looking to get out of the date You should know before you begin dating what you expect to get out of the dating process. Are you looking for companionship, someone that you can go to dinner and movies with? Or are you looking for something that will lead to marriage? Or maybe you are looking for a non-committed sexual relationship. Whatever youre looking for, make your intentions clear, and ask your prospective date to make their intentions clear to ensure you both want the same things. Know exactly what youre looking for Have in your mind and/or write down on paper, the type of person youre looking to date. Do you want someone reserved or out-going? Athletic build or skinny, short or tall, I think you get the general picture. If your prospective date doesnt have the look youre looking for, keep looking. Develop a set of standards and stick to them This might be the single most important aspect to dating. Developing a set of standards and sticking to them is like using a GPS or map to get you to unknown places. Dating for most people is unknown territory with the destination to be determined at a later date. A set of standards is your guide to navigating the unknown roads of dating. In developing a set of standards you should write the moral, ethical, religious, political, familial, and/or professional characteristics you are looking for. If you want to date a professional person with strong family values, whos a Christian, the lawyer whos not sure they want a family and is agnostic would not be a good dating decision. Write down all the qualities, traits, and strengths you are looking for in a partner and make sure you stick to it. Dont veer of course. Check list your date After you developed your own set of standards and know that you wont comprise them, use them as a checklist for prospective dates. If your prospective date doesnt check off on your list of standards, its a safe bet that they wont check off in life with you either. Anytime you begin to compromise your standards you will then be compromising the value that you put on your relationship. So if you don’t want to devalue your relationships, don’t devalue standards. Make inquires through family, friends, and associates Basic due diligence through family, friends, and or business associates are all smart things to do. When inquiring, ask about their temperance, likes/dislikes, personality traits, and other non-invasive things that will give you an insight to the person youre considering dating. When you know basic information about your prospective date and when you’re honest with yourself, you’ll know already if this person is going to be suitable for dating before you go on the date. Take a Mini-date A Mini-Date is a great way to pre-qualify your date before you go on an extensive date. Dont know what a mini-date is? Read my article on having a mini-date here. Have an evening chat I’m not talking about of the online variety type were anybody can say or do or be anything they want to be. I am talking about a phone conversation in which you can listen to their voice and their inflection, and you can ask probing questions. You can do all those things that you would normally be able to do in person, without having to be there next to the person. If you can take simple steps to pre-qualifying your prospective date, you will make your dating life run more smoothly and have a better pool of potential Mr. and Mrs. Rights to choose from. How to Overcome the High Prices of College Textbooks

By Groshan Fabiola Every year students require various college textbooks for their classes, spending a small fortune to purchase them. High standards should be improved in the business deal of purchasing new and used books so that all students would benefit of improved methods of learning. In recent years, college bookstores have begun to lose their monopoly over the market, generating pronounced imbalances regarding the average costs of most study materials. Thousands of students who will soon head off to college campuses nationwide are beginning to realize that it takes quite a bit of capital these days to buy textbooks. In the past two decades, college textbooks prices have increased considerably, at twice the rate of inflation. According to government estimates, students and their families have spent more than $6 billion on new and used textbooks over the period of the academic year 2003-2004. During 2002 and 2004, the average college student spent up to $900 a year for textbooks, around 3 percent more than in the last seven years. Recent studies have also revealed the fact that the average student nowadays spends about $100 on a single curriculum-oriented new book and about $65 on a similar used book. Fortunately, there are various high-standard educational institutions that are currently striving to overcome such topical issues regarding the low affordability of curricular study materials. The University of Phoenix for instance, has corrected such problems by modifying the general curriculum and preparing a lighter course load for attending students. By replacing most traditional textbooks with e-books, the University of Phoenix has become the first textbook-less college in the country. Highly skilled students joining selected programs nowadays benefit for Microsoft’s e-book reader software. However, in order to obtain unlimited access to interactive materials and up-to-date texts online, students still have to pay a per-course fee. In present, the University of Phoenix has almost 95,500 students at more than 100 locations across the country, currently striving to integrate all students in the e-book-oriented study program. In order to achieve a better position on the market, the great majority of booksellers have recently started to sell textbooks at a considerable discount off the cover price. Furthermore, special areas have been created in order to improve the selling of textbooks on the Internet. Another great source for college books are the online used bookstores, which help students find the textbooks of their interest at considerably lower prices. Students must be very careful when closing a deal on the Web. Considering the fact that textbook prices greatly vary on the Internet, students are advised to closely analyze all possible alternatives before choosing a certain bookseller over another. It is important to note that the purchase price should not be the only considered aspect when buying textbooks online; students should also factor in shipping costs and delivery time before deciding upon buying their desired textbooks on the Internet. In order to fight the high cost of college textbooks you should double-check for the correct 10-digit International Standard Book Number, or ISBN. This number is situated above the bar code on the textbook’s back cover or title page. When you are purchasing online you should check for the ISBN along with the book title, author and edition. If you simply cant afford new textbooks, you should consider purchasing used textbooks, as they are considerably less expensive than their new counterparts. You can purchase a used textbook at about 75 percent of the retail price of a new textbook. Prices vary anywhere from $10 to $80, with an approximate average of $40. Due to the fact that used books are a scarce and limited resource, often being sold out by the beginning of the school year, students may need to shop early in order to obtain their required used books. In spite of this fact, used textbooks are still a reliable, cost-effective alternative to new textbooks, allowing students to spend less money for their education. Caring for Bonsai plants

By Briscoe White Bonsai, pronounced bone-sigh (singular and plural) are dwarfed plants or trees grown in shallow pots or trays. The Japanese developed the art of Bonsai many hundreds of years ago. They tried to capture the beauty of oddly dwarfed trees that managed to grow under the most adverse conditions. Today, the beauty of these trees can be replicated indoors by pruning the roots and top growth, restricting the pot size and shaping the plant by wiring it. Plants used for Bonsai vary from traditional trees such as junipers and cypresses to flowering and fruiting shrubs and trees such as azaleas and camellias to tropical plants such as jade and ficus. With a little special care, The Bonsai can bring a little taste of the Orient into your home. The basic care requirements are as follows: 1) Light an unobstructed west, east or south window is preferred, south being the best in the winter. Grow lights can also be used successfully with Bonsai. 2) Water and Fertilizer the small pots require regular watering, typically once a day. The frequent watering depletes nutrients quickly so fertilizing is recommended (at half strength) monthly. 3) Temperature average house temperatures of 68-72 degrees are fine, although plants typically like nights to drop 10-15 degrees below the average daytime temperature. Placing the plant between the window and curtain usually satisfies this requirement. Some trees need a dormant cold period during the winter and can weather outdoors for 2 3 months in a protected spot. 4) Humidity to increase humidity indoors, group plants together, and mist daily. You can also use a room humidifier or place plants on a tray of moistened pebbles. To learn more about growing Bonsai, you may want to read the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens excellent handbook entitled Bonsai for Indoors. In 1985, Briscoe White opened The Growers Exchange in an abandoned Texaco station on a busy urban street corner in Richmond, Virginia. The facility has grown over the years, and is now 5 distinct growing environments with 5 acres under cover. Briscoe has over 25 years of gardening experience. By K. Monteith Chiropractic schools provide training and education in chiropractic health treatments. Chiropractic schools instruct students in a variety of topics related to the diagnosis and treatment of nervous and skeletal system problems. Chiropractic schools and colleges teach that interference within these systems disrupts normal body functioning and lowers the patient’s resistance to disease. Chiropractic schools take a holistic approach to the overall well-being of the patient, and a chiropractor takes into account every facet of the patient’s life, including exercise, diet, rest, environment and heredity. Chiropractic schools instruct prospective physicians to use non-surgical, natural, and drug-free health treatments, and to rely on the self-healing mechanisms of the patient’s body. Chiropractic schools recommend that students have an earned degree in the arts or sciences from an accredited college or university before entering the chiropractic educational system. Required areas of study must also include at least 90 semester hours of English, social sciences or humanities, organic and inorganic chemistry, biology, physics, and psychology. Upon completion of the chiropractic instruction, potential chiropractors must pass a four-part exam administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Depending upon individual state requirements, prospective chiropractors may be required to take supplemental examinations. Approximately 70 percent of chiropractors go into solo practice. While some chiropractors become instructors, others conduct research at other chiropractic schools, institutions and colleges, or practice chiropractic medicine in clinics and hospitals. According to Chiropractic Economics, self-employed chiropractors have higher earning potential than salaried chiropractors, and males earn about 25% more than females. With a degree from an accredited chiropractic schools, you can expect to earn anywhere from $90k – $139k per year.
